Abstract

In the 47th round ,data on literacy was collected and a test was carried out to test literacy for the persons who claim to be literate. This literacy test was undertaken only for those who claim to be literate in any of the 30 languages (including the languages listed in the constitution) in which instructions at the primary level are imparted in various states/U.T's. For the conduct of test separate forms were framed.

Duration of the 47th round was of 6 months from 1st July 1991 to 31st December 1991.

Notes

For this survey , a literate person was defined as one who could read and write a simple message in any language with understanding. Besides this, a test was introduced to access the literacy status of a person. In a sub-sample of household a verification test for literacy wasconducted for those who claimed to be literate but had less than five years of schooling and whose age exceeded 14 years. The test was conducted with the aid of a set of simple passage in any one of the 31 languages of the country. The respondents were required to read the passage to test their comprehension. Information was also collected on persons who lapsed into illeteracy and level of their schooling, reading habits and knowledge of number system i.e certain aspects of numeracy. Also, questions were asked about counting,reading writing of numbers and ability to perform simple arithmetic operations.
